There's a lot more that goes into buying a piece of real estate in a different country than the one you live in other than crossing borders. It takes a whole lot more planning than just having your passport up to date and buying the plane tickets. If you are a resident of and home owner in Mobile, Alabama or own homes in Hudson Valley and are thinking of buying real estate in another country, you should be aware of the situation before you start house hunting. It's nice to look at foreign real estate properties online and dream of owning them but it's an entirely different thing to go out and follow through on those thoughts.
It's not like you have the same opportunities to go to home showings like you would in Mobile, Alabama. Depending on what country you are thinking of buying real estate in, the destination can be thousands of miles away or even more. Even if you're thinking of buying real estate in our neighboring country of Canada, you can't just go online and look up a Chinese real estate agent in Toronto who can do your bidding for you.
If you plan on moving to the country you are buying the property in, you're going to have to go about securing a Visa to live there. Each Visa is only good for a certain amount of time because the host country you are moving to wants to make sure you are committed to living there. It's not like a business trip for some SEM Toronto conference or convention where you're only there for a couple of days and fall in love with the city. You have to be fully ready to commit yourself to living there. Which can't be easy. You might have to learn a new language, new words, new currency, new cultural norms, find places to exchange your Canadian ETFs, or locate the nearest grocery store, etc.
Some people can handle those challenges while others become home sick right away. There is also all the legal aspects of buying real estate in a foreign country. The paper work is different and must be completed to a perfect standard. There's no messing around. So make sure to hire yourself a lawyer who specializes in foreign land transactions.
Don't forget to think about such things as moving costs, air fare cost, how much money you'll have to spend for home, car, pet and health insurance. We've only mentioned a few things you need to concern yourself with before buying property in a foreign land. Even just buying land in Canada involves more than finding the right language school in Canada. Make sure that you're fully prepared to take on such a move before even looking at houses in France, Canada or Mexico. |
